Found throughout Australia, the Short-beaked Echidna is an egg-laying mammal (with a pouch!) that feeds on ants and termites. It is covered with spines and curls itself into a ball to deter predators when threatened. They have powerful legs and claws to burrow into soil and to dig into termite mounds.
